Coal Creek OHV Area

72,000 acres of off-road adventure for the entire family with many picturesque views of East Tennessee’s mountains and valleys. Explore over 250 miles of trails for riding ATV’s, motor cycles, mountain bikes and horses in addition to four wheeling in Jeeps and Railbuggies and Hiking. The Coal Creek OHV Area is the perfect place to see the Tennessee Valley Authorities’ 392 foot windmill farm. Maps, guides, camping facilities and ATV rentals available. Chuck Swan Wildlife Management Area

Situated on a peninsula in the center of beautiful Norris Lake, Chuck Swan Wildlife Management area offers the ultimate outdoor experience. With over 24,000 acres of wilderness and more than 70 miles of trails, outdoor enthusiast can hike, bike, horseback ride, ride off-road vehicles, fish and just sit back and enjoy all the many aspects of nature. Chuck Swan WMA also has boat access area and three designated areas for camping in addition to a 55 and 100 yard firing range. Trail maps available.

North Cumberland Wildlife Management Area

In the Cumberland Mountains of East Tennessee lies 53,000 acres of wilderness waiting to be explored by outdoor enthusiast. There are 600 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking and off-roading. In addition, Royal Blue is home to the only elk herd in the East. You will also encounter whitetail deer, wild turkey and beaver. The waters of the Royal Blue offer bass and bluegill fishing. It is also a major breeding ground for the Cerulean Warbler, a songbird that is a candidate for listing on the federal endangered species list. Maps available.

Norris Dam State Park

The park occupies more than 4,000 acres on the shores of Norris Lake and surrounds Norris Dam. The park has deluxe and rustic cabins, two camping areas with a combined 75 camp sites. In addition the park has a full service marina, swimming pool, game room, tennis courts, volleyball court, playgrounds, a laundry mat and primitive camping which can be reserved for groups. Caves, scenic valleys, sparkling streams, wildflower trails and a virgin forest with hiking trails are among the natural wonders of the Park. A park naturalist is on duty throughout the summer months to conduct a variety of planned programs and activities including guided tours, slide shows, and nature and history programs. Norris Watershed Hiking and Riding Trails

Songbird Trail on Clinch River

Enjoy walking or biking the wooded two mile loop trail that meanders along the Clinch River from Norris Dam to the Lenoir Museum Complex and Norris Watershed. There are several access points for rafting, canoe or fishing the clinch river. Trail maps available at Welcome Center.

Haw Ridge Park

Explore 28 miles of hiking, mountain bike riding, running, nordic skiing and horseback riding trails and five miles of shore line that offers access for canoeing. Haw Ridge’s forest floor supports over 40 varieties of wildflowers and visitors will more than likely come across some type of wildlife from deer to blue heroin to the rare tree goat. How Ridge is also a popular destination for orienteering and geocashing. Trail maps available.

North Ridge Trail

A national recreation trail, North Ridge offers 7.5 miles of light hiking through greenbelt land on the Northern Boundary of Oak Ridge. Visitors will enjoy the variety of wildlife and native plants. Trail maps available.

University of Tennessee Forest and Arboretum

The arboretum has interpretive nature trails and ecological point of interest among its 250 acres featuring 2,500 plant specimens, which represent 800 species of trees, shrubs and flowering plants threaded by four nature trails. Trail maps available.

Savage Gardens

Visit this 30 acre garden of many rare and sensitive wildflowers. There are also many towering limestone rock formations to explore. Open March, April and May.
